Mobile Handset Market Stays Afloat with 258 Million Shipped in 1Q-2009

Despite tough corporate and unemployment news making the headlines, the mobile handset-buying public did not head to the hills during the first quarter of 2009. Handset vendors had shipped 258 million handsets by the end of the quarter. Although that represents an 11% year-over-year decline, the result significantly exceeded the previous forecast of 253.5 million. Great Expectations: Would You Look for a Touchscreen on a $50 Mobile Phone?

An ABI Research survey on mobile phone users' age-related feature and price assumptions found nearly half of the respondents in the 40-59 age bracket expected a touchscreen on a US$50 mobile device. That survey, conducted in February, 2009, aimed to discover what features people have on their phones, which are actually being used, and what features people of different ages expect to find on cellular handsets at various price-points.  more

Global PND Shipments Will Stagnate at 39 Million Units in 2009

The once booming personal navigation device market is grinding to a halt in 2009 with little or no growth expected in most regions. With the European PND market forecast to decline and the North American market remaining flat, Asia-Pacific remains the only growth market.  more
