The approaching switchover to all-digital television broadcasting in the United States and other major countries will create an unprecedented opportunity for the mobile TV market, according to a new study from ABI Research. While mobile broadcast TV was pioneered in Japan and South Korea, following the switchover traditional and mobile TV broadcasters and cellular operators in many regions will launch mobile TV services that are forecast to attract over 500 million viewers by 2013. more

Nearly 420 Million NFC Chipsets Will Ship by 2012
More than 419 million NFC chipsets will ship in 2012, according to a new study from ABI Research. However, similar to revenue in most semiconductor markets, NFC revenue is offset by declining unit ASPs. By 2012, ABI Research forecasts that the NFC chipset ASP will decline to $0.97, for a total market revenue of $406 million. more

M2M Vendors Focus on Service Offerings to Counter the Threat of Commoditization
Wavecom, a M2M wireless module vendor, recently announced a partnership with M2M mobile operator Jasper Wireless to offer Wavecom's "StarService" on Jasper Wireless' global service platform. StarService, which enables customers to obtain the WM50 module from Wavecom for free with the remote device management service, is an interesting approach toward ameliorating the commoditization pressures facing the wireless module industry. These pressures include tightening gross margins in the short term, and anxiety over possible obsolescence of modules in the M2M value chain over the longer term, as wireless connectivity potentially becomes directly integrated into end-equipment. more
