Tier 2 Mobile Handset Vendors Must Compete on Two Fronts

Tier 2 mobile handset vendors shipped 80.5 million units last year, a small fraction of the global total. But they face significant challenges when seeking greater market share. They are competing against the Tier 1 giants of the industry, which together control about 70% of the global market. They are also trying to differentiate themselves and create recognizable brands. According to a new study from ABI Research, the most obvious strategies open to them may not be the best.  more

Linux to Take Lion's Share of MID Market

The Mobile Internet Devices (MID) market is likely to be the first real example of a greenfield situation in which all mobile operating systems start on the same equal footing, without the baggage of previous histories such as existed in the smartphone market. The Linux OS, in the form of Moblin, LiMo and Maemo, looks ready to take the lion's share of the MID market and is set to capture unit volumes of 50 millions units per annum in 2013.  more

Nearly 20% of Mid- and High-End Mobile Devices Will Run a Linux Operating System by 2013

Linux, which has been much maligned by Symbian and Microsoft as a non-starter in the handset operating system market, is set to see strong growth as issues with framework fragmentation and silicon requirements are alleviated. The growing momentum behind the LiMo Foundation initiative, as well as the marketing boost that has been realized from the entry of Google's Android solution has been further enhanced by Nokia's support of the Maemo solution and its purchase of Trolltech.  more

Does Motorola's UIQ Investment Signal a Continued Dominance for Symbian?

Recently, Motorola took a stake in UIQ, a user interface solution for mobile devices pre-integrated with the Symbian mobile operating system. Symbian has long been considered a company dominated by the agenda of Nokia; and Motorola's apparent "buy in" to the ecosystem looks to be (at face value) a knee-jerk reaction to its current poor performance. But ABI Research asks: Why would Motorola entertain strengthening the competitive position of its biggest competitor, Nokia?  more

Linux to be the Fastest-Growing Smartphone OS over the Next 5 Years

Research director Stuart Carlaw states, "Serious initiatives from the likes of Intel and Access are gathering pace and momentum, whilst the carrier community continues to identify Linux as one of the few operating systems that it intends to support in its long-term plans." Carlaw adds, "Linux is benefiting from growing support in the handset OEM community, most notably Motorola, but also Nokia with less traditional types of devices aimed at mobile broadband applications." The rise of mobile broadband and the impact that this has upon device convergence and format plays into the hands of Linux. more

The iPhone is No Smartphone - Report

Apple's iPhone was the talk of the town after its January 9 launch. Industry observers were by and large impressed with the new device, praising its user interface, innovation, and seamless integration. But two senior ABI Research analysts -- wireless research director Stuart Carlaw, and principal mobile broadband analyst Philip Solis -- point out that while the iPhone is undoubtedly clever and capable, it is not correct to call it a smartphone, as much of the media has done. more
