Will WiMAX Deliver on its Royalty Promises?

One of the major advantages claimed by the WiMAX community over their cellular cousins is that WiMAX will come with a far lower average royalty rate than either LTE or UMB. A favorite phrase among the WiMAX OEM community is that WiMAX has effectively "democratized" the 4G space. Although ABI research applauds the move to a more widespread intellectual property holding in the 4G realm, it could be argued that this democratization of IP will result in more, not fewer, IP royalties.  more

Personal Navigation Devices Will Surpass 100 Million Units by 2011

The consumer navigation market has seen unprecedented levels of activity and growth in 2007, mainly driven by PNDs (personal navigation devices) which offer a compelling mix of ease of use, features, portability, and affordability says ABI Research. As an established mass market CE category, PND markets will continue to grow strongly to reach a global sales volume of more than 100 million units by 2011. Dedicated PNDs will remain the preferred form factor for use in the car but will be complemented by handset-based systems for pedestrian navigation and new use cases such as outdoors. New form factors such as portable media players, ultra mobile PCs, Internet tablets and mobile Internet devices will also appear.  more

M2M Vendors Focus on Service Offerings to Counter the Threat of Commoditization

Wavecom, a M2M wireless module vendor, recently announced a partnership with M2M mobile operator Jasper Wireless to offer Wavecom's "StarService" on Jasper Wireless' global service platform. StarService, which enables customers to obtain the WM50 module from Wavecom for free with the remote device management service, is an interesting approach toward ameliorating the commoditization pressures facing the wireless module industry. These pressures include tightening gross margins in the short term, and anxiety over possible obsolescence of modules in the M2M value chain over the longer term, as wireless connectivity potentially becomes directly integrated into end-equipment.  more

Linux to be the Fastest-Growing Smartphone OS over the Next 5 Years

Research director Stuart Carlaw states, "Serious initiatives from the likes of Intel and Access are gathering pace and momentum, whilst the carrier community continues to identify Linux as one of the few operating systems that it intends to support in its long-term plans." Carlaw adds, "Linux is benefiting from growing support in the handset OEM community, most notably Motorola, but also Nokia with less traditional types of devices aimed at mobile broadband applications." The rise of mobile broadband and the impact that this has upon device convergence and format plays into the hands of Linux. more

32% of All Wireless Connectivity ICs Will Be Integrated in 2011

A new study by ABI Research has found that by 2011, 32% of all Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC, WiMedia, GPS, and FM Radio IC shipments will be integrated products that are either incorporated into a connectivity package combining two or more solutions, or will be integrated with a host processor or baseband processor. The report also found that the two equipment sectors most likely to see the majority of integration activity will be cellular handsets and mobile computing. more
