As LBS Subscribers Multiply, Sustainable Business Models Emerging

The number of subscribers to handset-hosted location based services (LBS) increased in 2008 to more than 18 million. North America continued to be the dominant region, accounting for slightly more than two-thirds of the total market, according to a new study from ABI Research. While navigation continued to lead in terms of total subscribers, two other application areas – enterprise and community (including social networking) – posted the highest year-to-year growth rates.  more

82 Million Location-based Mobile Social Networking Subscriptions by 2013

Mobile location-based social networking is expected to become a key driver for the uptake of location-based services as it provides a unifying framework for a large set of applications such as friend finders, local search and geo-tagging. GPS-enabled Handsets to Generate Over $100 Billion in Revenues in 2012

Shipments of GPS-enabled mobile phones will generate over $50 billion in revenues in 2008, rising to $100 billion in 2012. The market for these handsets is expected to grow from around 240 million units in 2008 to over 550 million handset shipments in 2012. At present, most current GPS-enabled handsets are CDMA devices, but increasing numbers of GPS-enabled handsets for 3G/WCDMA networks will start to appear in the market from 2008 onwards.  more

NIM Claims Two Million Paid Mobile Phone Navigation Subscribers

GPS-Enabled Location-Based Subscribers Will Total 315 Million in Five Years

In 2011, the total population of GPS-enabled location-based services (LBS) subscribers will reach 315 million, up from 12 million in 2006, according to a new study from ABI Research. Put another way, that represents a rise from less than 0.5% of total wireless subscribers today to more than 9% worldwide at the end of the study's 5-year forecast period. more
