UK Planning a Shake-Up of Radio Spectrum

The UK government has published details of plans to revamp radio spectrum management which could resolve a long-running battle between the two original mobile networks. Vodafone and O2 have been fighting plans proposed back in 2007 by the telecoms regulator to take back some of their licensed radio spectrum and refarm it to the later networks.  more

Vodafone Extends New Zealand 900Mhz License to 2031

Vodafone has completed a series of radio spectrum swaps in New Zealand and renewed its license in the 900mhz band. The swap in January of two 4-MHz portions of spectrum between NZ Communications and the Crown came about following discussions involving all the mobile network operators. The Government can now amalgamate some spectrum it manages, which means more will become available for non-cellular uses.  more

Qualcomm Warns About Scarce 3G Spectrum in Asia Region

In an interview, Qualcomm's president for Southeast Asia and the Pacific region, John Stefanac warned that mobile operators face a regulatory regime which is not allocating sufficient radio spectrum for 3G services. Citing a recent example in Indonesia, he told the South China Morning Post that the networks were only granted 5-10Mhz of spectrum each, which is not sufficient to deploy viable 3G services.  more

AIS Signs Up Just 100 Customers to its 3G Service

Thailand's Advanced Info Service (AIS) has blamed a lack of radio spectrum for the lack of interest in its test 3G network in Chiang Mai which was launched a couple of weeks ago. The company has not been able to promote the service effectively and said that it has signed up just 100 new customers to the 3G network. The 3G network is one of the first to run in the 900mhz spectrum band as the country has not released any licenses for the more conventional 2.1Ghz bands.  more

Pakistan Planning 3G Spectrum Auction

Pakistan is expected to auction off three blocks of 3G spectrum in the next few months - reports local media. As the existing mobile licenses are technology neutral and therefore can already offer 3G service (hardware permitting), there wont be a 3G license process - simply the allocation of spectrum in the 3G bands - namely 2.1Ghz.  more

Nigeria Announces Plans for 3G Licenses

In a release from the Nigerian telecoms regulator (NCC), the Nigerian Government sasy that it has agreed to licence spectrum in the 1800MHz and 900mhz bands to the Mubadala Development Company of the United Arab Emirates. more
