AIS Suspends 3G Expansion Pending License Auction

Thailand's Advanced Info Service (AIS) has suspended the expansion of its trial 3G network running over the 900mhz band, citing concerns about congestion for its existing GSM subscribers. The conpany will now wait for the long delayed 3G auction to release radio spectrum in the more conventional 2100 Mhz bands.  more

Thai Operator to Push Ahead with 3G Network Rollout

Thailand's state owned operator, TOT has told the Reuters news agency that it will proceed with plans to deploy a 3G network, with a commercial launch due by the end of the year. The government has previously hinted that it will sell 3G auctions in the first half of this year.  more

3G Network Launched in Bangkok

Thailand's Advanced Info Service (AIS) is reported to have launched its long planned 3G network - operating in the 900mhz band - in the capital city, Bangkok. The firm is already operating a 3G network in the 900mhz band in Chiang Mai, pending the award of 3G licenses and spectrum in the more conventional 2.1Ghz bands.  more

Qualcomm Warns About Scarce 3G Spectrum in Asia Region

In an interview, Qualcomm's president for Southeast Asia and the Pacific region, John Stefanac warned that mobile operators face a regulatory regime which is not allocating sufficient radio spectrum for 3G services. Citing a recent example in Indonesia, he told the South China Morning Post that the networks were only granted 5-10Mhz of spectrum each, which is not sufficient to deploy viable 3G services.  more

Qualcomm Says Thailand Needs at Least Three 3G Networks

Qualcomm Thailand country manager, Kaneungjit Suriyathumrongkul has warned that Thailand will need at least three 3G networks to ensure sufficient competition in the market. Ms Suriyathumrongkul also noted that MVNOs were an option for the country, but only if the underlying network is good and expressed concerns with the idea of a shared national network.  more

Thai Operator to Delay 3G Rollout

Thai operator, DTAC has announced that it will delay the launch of its 3G network until it sees more demand for mobile data services. The decision was taken by the company's new CEO, Tore Johnsen, who took charge of DTAC earlier this month.  more

Thailand Approves 3G Plans for State Owned Operator

Thailand's government has approved - in principle - the 3G business plan for state owned operator, TOT as proposed by the Information and Communications Technology Ministry. The plan will now have to be submitted for approval to the National Economic and Social Development Board and the Public Debt Management Office.  more

Thailand May Set $200 Million Reserve on 3G Licenses

Thailand's telecoms regulator, the NTC is expected to set a reserve price of US$200 million for the smaller of the available 3G licenses when they are awarded - probably later this year. The final report from outside consultants, InterConnect Communications is understood to have recommended that four licenses are offered by an auction method.  more
