Greenland's sole mobile network operator, Tele Greenland has commissioned Nokia Siemens Networks to roll out a 3G network on 900 MHz frequency and upgrade its existing core network. Nokia Siemens Networks will provide network implementation and software maintenance services, as well as emergency call support. Implementation of the 3G network will be completed in spring 2010. more

Thai Operator Starts Testing 3G at 900Mhz
Thai network operator, Total Access Communication (dtac) has announced the start of a trial of a 3G network operating in the 900mhz spectrum bands. In the initial part of the trial, the trial area will cover Chulalongkorn University, Pantip Plaza and MBK shopping centers, Siam Square, Sam Yan, and Chamchuri Square. Later the coverage area will be expanded to other areas in Bangkok. more

European Regulators Approve 3G in the 900Mhz Bands
Europe is to modify its restriction on the use of the 900mhz frequency band for just GSM services to permit WCDMA services in the same bands. The Council of Ministers followed the European Parliament in approving a proposal from the European Commission to modernise European legislation - the so-called GSM Directive - on the use of the radio spectrum needed for mobile services. more

Ericsson to cover Faroe Islands and its offshore with mobile broadband
Ericsson has signed an eight-year contract with Faroe Islands based operator, Faroese Telecom to build and deploy a WCDMA/HSPA network for both the 2100MHz and 900mhz frequencies. This will enable Faroese Telecom to deliver high-speed mobile broadband services to remote areas across the Faroe Islands and even offshore platforms in the North Atlantic. more

3G Operator, Hi3G Granted 900Mhz Spectrum in Sweden
The Swedish Post and Telecom Agency (PTS) has made the decision to approve an application from the operators TeliaSonera, Swefour, Tele2, Telenor and Hi3G for frequencies in the 900 MHz band. The present licences in the 900 MHz band will be renewed and it will be possible for the operators to phase in new technology for mobile broadband while at the same time continuing to offer GSM mobile telephony. more

O2, Vodafone Reported to be in Network Sharing Talks
UK operators, O2 and Vodafone are reported to be in advanced talks regarding sharing their network infrastructure. Citing people close to the talks, the Financial Times that a deal "could provide them with significant savings in capital and operating spending". Vodafone's CEO, Vittorio Collao is currently seeking annual cost savings of £1bn by 2010-11 to bring the UK divisions' operating margins up to the average compared to its other country networks. more
