World's First Femtocell Standard Published by 3GPP
Three trade bodies, The Femto Forum, 3gpp and the Broadband Forum have jointly announced that the world's first femtocell standard has been officially published by 3gpp, paving the way for interoperability between different vendors' access points and femto gateways. The new standard, which forms part of 3gpp's Release 8, and interdependent with Broadband Forum extensions to its Technical Report-069 (TR-069), has been completed in just 12 months following cooperation between the three groups. more

Study Finds Interference Between Femtocells and Maco Network Not a Problem
Femtocell trade group, The Femto Forum has published the results of a study which studied problems with network interference caused by the close proximity of femtocells and macrocells. The study found that femtocells have the potential to deliver an order of magnitude more capacity than the macro network alone when used in dense deployments, even when occupying the same radio channel as the macrocells. It also identified numerous technological solutions that mitigate potential interference with the macro network to remove barriers to wide-scale deployment and maximize the capacity benefits. more

Femtocells – to Be or Not to Be?
Although mobile operators are increasingly optimistic about femtocells, there are many doubts circulating around this new technology as it struggles to resolve key challenges such as functionality and cost. Operators believe that they are capable of cutting costs and retaining more customers, but proof remains to be seen. In the last femtocells study, Frost & Sullivan is skeptical, outlining multiple challenges, that do not look like they could be resolved by the end of 2008. more

3GPP Adds 3G Support to UMA Standard
UMA Today - a consortium of companies promoting UMA/GAN technology - has announced that the 3gpp standards body completed a specification update effort last week that added 3G (Iu-interface) support to the UMA/GAN standard. With the 3G version of the 3gpp UMA/GAN standard now complete, the vendor community is rapidly developing UMA-based 3G dual-mode handset and femtocell products in anticipation of operator service deployments later this year. more
