New Technology Could Double 3G Network Voice Call Capacity
Finnish operator Elisa and Nokia Siemens Networks have demonstrated a new technology that allows operators to increase voice capacity of their 3G networks, potentially up to double the baseline capacity. The trial call was conducted in Elisa's live 3G network using R&D prototype devices supplied by Nokia. In technical terms the demonstration was of the world's first circuit switched call over a high speed packet access network (CSoHSPA). more

Top-five handset OEM signs first Coolteq deal
Nujira, a developer of mobile phone platforms says that it has signed a deal with an unnamed handset manufacturer to provide its Coolteq-l handset development platform. The unnamed customer is reported to be one of the world's top five handset makers. more

World's First Femtocell Standard Published by 3GPP
Three trade bodies, The Femto Forum, 3gpp and the Broadband Forum have jointly announced that the world's first femtocell standard has been officially published by 3gpp, paving the way for interoperability between different vendors' access points and femto gateways. The new standard, which forms part of 3gpp's Release 8, and interdependent with Broadband Forum extensions to its Technical Report-069 (TR-069), has been completed in just 12 months following cooperation between the three groups. more

Voice over LTE Initiative Launched
A group of leaders in the wireless industry comprised of Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei, Kineto Wireless, LG Electronics, Motorola, Nortel, Samsung, Starent Networks, T-Mobile and ZTE have announced a joint effort, referred to as the Voice over LTE via Generic Access (VoLGA) Forum. The joint effort aims to define a set of specifications within the forum for enabling delivery of voice services over LTE access networks based on the current 3gpp Generic Access Network (GAN) standard. more

3G Americas Reiterates Need for Industry to Move Towards IPv6 Addressing
Industry trade body, 3G Americas has published a white paper which is outlining the needs in the Americas region to plan a transition to the internet addressing system, IPv6. The explosive growth in the wireless industry has created a requirement for always-available IP addresses. IPv4 addresses are rapidly diminishing and are likely to exhaust by 2012. more

Actix unveils Self-Optimizing Network solution for LTE networks
Actix says that it plans to deliver the world's first commercial Self-Optimizing Network (SON) system for LTE networks during 2009. SON virtually eliminates human involvement for network planning and optimization and is a central element of the vision advocated by both the 3gpp and the Next Generation Mobile Networks Group, enabling a new way of managing the performance and maintenance of 4G radio access networks. more

Nortel Completes LTE-TDD Wireless Demo in China
Nortel says that it has successfully completed the first end-to-end video streaming session using a Time Division Duplex (TDD)-based LTE network, working with commercial grade LTE Base Station and device prototypes in China. This is an important milestone in the development of next generation wireless services for TD-SCDMA mobile network deployments in China, as well as advancing the deployment of LTE for service providers using TDD spectrum. more
