Telecom Italia Mobile Lost 1.5 Million Customers in 2008
The Italian market lost a total of 135k customers over the year, with net losses in Q2 and Q4 trumping the smaller net gains in the other two periods. The year closed with a total base of 88.58m, compared to 88.72m, while penetration dropped from 152.6% to 152.4%. more

EU calls on mobile operators to continue to improve child safety policies
Half of 10 year-old, 87% of 13 year-old and 95% of 16 year-old children in the EU have a mobile phone, but half of European parents worry mobile phone use might expose their children to sexually and violently explicit images (51%) or bullying by other children (49%), according to a survey. The European Commission has now called on mobile operators to do more to keep children safe while using mobile phones by putting in place all the measures in the voluntary code of conduct, signed by 26 mobile operators in 2007. more

Dell Reported to be in Talks for Chinese Smartphones
Dell Computers, which has been rumoured to be entering the smartphone market for several years, is now hotly rumoured to be in talks with China Mobile to launch its first range of handsets in the country. The company has been apparently rebuffed by several operators who considered prototype handsets as bland an uninspiring. However China Mobile is thought to be keen on the models presented to it. more

BSNL To Start Selling 3G USB Modems
Indian mobile phone manufacturer, Micromax says that it has secured a distribution deal with state-owned mobile network operator, BSNL for its 3g USB Modems. BSNL is currently rolling out its 3g network, and currently covers 11 cities - with the intention to cover approx 700 cities in the next 2-3 months. more

Smart Phones Ring in Healthy Growth in 2009 Despite Mobile Meltdown
Although the outlook for the overall mobile handset market continues to dim, smart phones remain a bright spot with global unit growth as high as 11.1 percent in 2009, iSuppli is predicting. iSuppli's optimistic forecast for global smart phone unit shipments calls for 192.3 million units in 2009, up 11.1 percent from 173.6 million in 2008. A more pessimistic outlook calls for growth of only 6 percent this year, reaching 183.9 million units. more

According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 9.3 million units, 25.9% higher than the 7.4 million shipped in 4Q07. Western European Mobile Phone Market now in Recession
Three consecutive quarters of negative growth have led the Western European mobile phone market into recession. According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 53.6 million units in 4Q08, 13.5% lower than the 62 million units shipped in 4Q07. For the full year 2008, vendors shipped 190.5 million units in Western Europe, 5.9% lower than the 202.5 million units shipped in 2007. more

Mobile Music Revenues to Reach $14.6bn by 2013 Despite Fall in Ringtone Sales
