Ericsson Wins Philippines 3G Upgrade Contract
Ericsson has won a contract to upgrade the Philippine GSM network, SMART with WCDMA infrastructure. With this deployment, SMART is the first operator in Southeast Asia to launch a HSPA network in the 850MHz band. The network uses lower frequencies, which improve the quality of the radio signals, extending coverage and enabling rapid deployment. more

Smart Phones Ring in Healthy Growth in 2009 Despite Mobile Meltdown
Although the outlook for the overall mobile handset market continues to dim, smart phones remain a bright spot with global unit growth as high as 11.1 percent in 2009, iSuppli is predicting. iSuppli's optimistic forecast for global smart phone unit shipments calls for 192.3 million units in 2009, up 11.1 percent from 173.6 million in 2008. A more pessimistic outlook calls for growth of only 6 percent this year, reaching 183.9 million units. more

Weak Forecast for Taiwan's Smartphone Shipments in Q1 '09
According to statistics compiled by Taipei-based MIC - Taiwanese smart cellular device shipment volume (including Smartphones and PDA phones) reached 9.61 million units in the fourth quarter of 2008, up 46.4% year-on-year, but down 12.8% sequentially. The industry was affected by the global economic downturn and the reduction of Apple iPhone 3g production after the shipment peak in the third quarter. more
