Mobile Handset Market Stays Afloat with 258 Million Shipped in 1Q-2009

Despite tough corporate and unemployment news making the headlines, the mobile handset-buying public did not head to the hills during the first quarter of 2009. Handset vendors had shipped 258 million handsets by the end of the quarter. Although that represents an 11% year-over-year decline, the result significantly exceeded the previous forecast of 253.5 million. "Green shoots are sprouting," is how ABI Research vice president Jake Saunders describes the latest figures.  more

Nokia Shows Off 3rd NFC Capable Mobile Phone

Nokia has shown off its third fully integrated Near Field Communication (NFC) mobile phone, the Nokia 6216 classic. The new arrival is Nokia's first SIM-based NFC device which enables operators to build NFC services on to the SIM card. The Nokia 6216 classic is expected to start shipping in the third quarter of 2009 in select markets with an estimated retail price of EUR 150 before taxes and subsidies.  more

Nokia Signs $1.76 Billion Handsets Deal in China

Nokia says that it has renewed a trade agreement in China which will see it sell mobile phones worth at least US$1.76 billion in 2009 to China PTAC. Mr. Colin Giles, President of Nokia China and Senior Vice President, Greater China, Japan and Korea Sales Unit, and Mr. Tan Xinhui, Chairman of China PTAC Communication Service, signed the agreement on behalf of the two parties.  more

Nokia Siemens Completes 2nd Phase of China Mobile TD-SCDMA Rollout

Nokia Siemens Networks has announced that it is one of first vendors to complete phase two deployment of China Mobile's 3g network, based on TD-SCDMA technology. FMC and femtocell equipment markets poised to take off in face of downturn

Market research firm Infonetics Research has released a report on FMC and Femtocell Equipment, which forecasts that combined, sales of FMC network element equipment and femtocell equipment are expected to grow at a healthy rate through the economic downturn and really take off in 2011, reaching nearly $8 billion worldwide by 2013.  more
