Israel Consults on Possible 3G Spectrum Auction

Israel's Ministry of Communications is to hold a public consultation to decide how to allocate a batch of unused 3g radio spectrum. The move has been prompted by a request from MIRS Communications after it was earlier blocked from bidding for WiMAX licenses.  more

Motorola Wins Chinese 3G Contract

Motorola says that it has won a W-CDMA contract with China Unicom for an undisclosed amount. Under the contract, Motorola will provide China Unicom with W-CDMA radio access network equipment, packet switched core network (PS core), and 2G/3g interoperability functions that will enable the integration of China Unicom's GSM and W-CDMA networks.  more

3G-4G to Account for 30% of Global Wireless Subscriptions by 2013

At the end of 2008, only 11% of worldwide wireless subscriptions were 3g. By the end of 2013, the percentage of 3g and 4G subscriptions will reach 30%, reports In-Stat. This trend is reflected in fourth quarter 2008 wireless infrastructure contract awards.  more

Voice over LTE Initiative Launched

A group of leaders in the wireless industry comprised of Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei, Kineto Wireless, LG Electronics, Motorola, Nortel, Samsung, Starent Networks, T-Mobile and ZTE have announced a joint effort, referred to as the Voice over LTE via Generic Access (VoLGA) Forum. The joint effort aims to define a set of specifications within the forum for enabling delivery of voice services over LTE access networks based on the current 3gPP Generic Access Network (GAN) standard.  more

Telecom Equipment Market Expected to Suffer a Sharp Downturn in 2009

The global telecommunications equipment market grew by close to 5% in 2008: a moderate rate of growth that involved a shift in the contribution made by handset components and infrastructure hardware reports IDATE. From a geographical standpoint, Asia was the prime source of growth - specifically China and India - which accounts for two-thirds of the increase in sales worldwide, while representing only just over 40% of the total market (and China and India combined accounting for less than 20%).  more

Review of China's Mobile Phone Market in 2008 and Outlook for 2009

China's CCID Consulting has reported that Chinese mobile phone sales volume in 2008 reached 161 million sets, lower than 185 million sets as estimated at the beginning of 2008. Advanced international manufacturers firmly stick to their position in the global market, with declining performances. On one hand, a weakening economic environment put the whole mobile phone industry in difficult times, with all international enterprises being seriously affected; on the other hand, manufacturers in new emerging market faces the dilemma of increasing output amid lowering prices, that although the international giants absorb most of the pressures to a fuller extent, smaller enterprises would still have to seek a subtle balance among scale, cost and profit.  more

Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Down by 5% in Q4 '08

The global economic downturn had a significant impact on the mobile phone industry as worldwide mobile phone sales to end users totalled 314.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2008, a 4.6 per cent decline from the fourth quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Western European Mobile Phone Market now in Recession

Three consecutive quarters of negative growth have led the Western European mobile phone market into recession. According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 53.6 million units in 4Q08, 13.5% lower than the 62 million units shipped in 4Q07. For the full year 2008, vendors shipped 190.5 million units in Western Europe, 5.9% lower than the 202.5 million units shipped in 2007.  more

Chinese Handset Production Growth Down to Single Figures

China's CCID Consulting has reported that after a period of rapid growth over the past few years, the Chinese mobile handset chips market experienced a conspicuous decline in 2008. The research firm predicts that the scale of Chinese mobile phone chips market is expected to reach RMB 110 billion (US$16 billion), up by 6%, down to single-digit growth for the first time.  more
