LTE Deployments will Cluster in 2600 Frequency Band

Strategy Analytics is predicting that the majority of LTE deployments by wireless operators will use the 2,600 MHz band, creating ample new opportunities for terminal component vendors. A strong tranche of deployments will also occur at sub-1,000 MHz frequencies, including roll-outs by such prominent operators as Verizon in the US, eventually accounting for one-third of deployments globally.  more

Qualcomm and Broadcom Wave a Paper and Declare "Peace For Our Time"

The acrimonious patent battle between Qualcomm and Broadcom is finally over. The two firms have entered into a settlement and multi-year patent agreement, which will result in the dismissal with prejudice of all litigation between the companies, including all patent infringement claims in the International Trade Commission and U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, as well as the withdrawal by Broadcom of its complaints to the European Commission and the Korea Fair Trade Commission.  more

ZTE First-Quarter Profits Up by 29%

China's ZTE has reported that its first-quarter revenues reached RMB 11.67 billion (US$1.71 billion), representing an increase of 35% compared with the same period last year. Net profit was RMB 78.66 million (US$11.54 million), representing an increase of 29.17% compared with the same period last year.  more

Telecom Italia Mobile Lost 1.5 Million Customers in 2008

The Italian market lost a total of 135k customers over the year, with net losses in Q2 and Q4 trumping the smaller net gains in the other two periods. The year closed with a total base of 88.58m, compared to 88.72m, while penetration dropped from 152.6% to 152.4%.  more

Finland Awards Radio Spectrum for LTE Networks

Finland's TeliaSonera, Elisa and DNA have been allocated additional frequencies enabling them to start building fourth generation (LTE) mobile networks. The frequencies are located in the 1,800 MHz band, which will make Finland the first country in Europe to allow the use of 4G LTE technology at such low frequencies.  more

Mobistar Profits Up Despite Price Pressures

Belgium based Mobistar has reported a slight rise in first-quarter revenues of 2.5% to reach EUR 371.2 million (US$483.8 million) - although its customer base rose by 6.4% over the same period. The company said the disparity was determined in part by the continuing price pressure in a highly competitive market, by the regulatory decisions (lowering of the mobile termination rates in May and July 2008) and a reduced activity in the business market.  more

Vodafone Sees Loss of UK Market Share and Lower ARPUs

The UK added over 3m new mobile connections during 2008, to take the total base to 75.75m, equivalent to 124% penetration. Fitch Downgrades Deutsche Telekom on Guidance Revision, Weak Operating Results

Fitch Ratings has downgraded Deutsche Telekom's (DT) Long-term Issuer Default rating (IDR) to 'BBB+' from 'A-' (A minus) and assigned a Stable Outlook. This follows DT's downward guidance revision for 2009 as operating pressures continue apace in key markets.  more

Nokia Shows Off 3rd NFC Capable Mobile Phone

Nokia has shown off its third fully integrated Near Field Communication (NFC) mobile phone, the Nokia 6216 classic. The new arrival is Nokia's first SIM-based NFC device which enables operators to build NFC services on to the SIM card. The Nokia 6216 classic is expected to start shipping in the third quarter of 2009 in select markets with an estimated retail price of EUR 150 before taxes and subsidies.  more
