Qiao Xing Mobile to Boost 3G Phone Development Staff

China's Qiao Xing Mobile says that it plans to accelerate its 3G mobile phone R&D by adding 200 engineers to its existing R&D team in Beijing in 2009. The new personnel will spearhead the Company's research, design, development and commercialization of 3G handsets, with a focus on TD-SCDMA and WCDMA products.  more

Femtocells Can Connect 3G Phones to Home Media Centres

UK based ip.access says that it has developed new 3G Home Routing technology that connects 3G phones into a home network via its Oyster 3G femtocell. The new platform provide a real-time "bridge" between the userĂ's home network and any 3G handset. Using a femtocell, a 3G phone can connect directly to a home network and access files and information stores on computers or a media centre.  more

3G Will Become The Dominant Technology, But Not Until 2010"

While 2004 saw the widespread emergence of commercial 3G services in Europe, Forrester Research predicts that 3G will not become the dominant technology for mobile phones until 2010. GSM-only phones will fade out quickly within the next two years, and GPRS will dominate for the rest of the decade. Forrester believes, however, that despite 3G phone use becoming mainstream, adoption of mobile Internet services will remain sluggish across Europe.

First 3G Handset from Chinese Vendor

China TechFaith Wireless Communication Technology, a handset application software and handset solution provider based in China, says that it has released its first 3G phone. The phone is available in Italy and features Qualcomm's 6250 chipset, with WCDMA/GSM mode. The candy bar shaped phone is 19mm thick, with 64MB memory capable front 100K and rear 300K pixel cameras. more

Sprint shows off 3G phone from Sanyo

 

SprintPCS and Sanyo Fisher Company are giving a sneak peak at what futuristic 3G phones hold for customers. A 3G Sprint PCS Phone by Sanyo featuring a 2.5-inch OLED display will be showcased this week at the Consumer Electronics Show during a keynote speech delivered by Sprint chairman and CEO, William T. Esrey. This type of 3G phone is estimated to be available in 2003 and is for demonstrating potential, future applications. OLED displays are light in weight and are self-emitting, require no backlighting, which results in lower battery consumption. The OLED display is comprised of thin layers of individual carbon-based elements that emit light when electric current is passed through them. more
