Mobile phone shipments in 2009 will be down by 9.1%
The economic downturn will have a significant impact on mobile phone shipments in 2009; the volumes will be down globally by 9.1%. This is according to the latest forecasts from consulting firm, Ovum. All regions, even those in emerging markets, will be hit to some extent by the downturn. Shipments will start to recover from 2010 onwards, although it will take until 2012 before global volumes are back to the level seen in 2008. more

Qiao Xing Mobile to Boost 3G Phone Development Staff
China's Qiao Xing Mobile says that it plans to accelerate its 3G mobile phone R&D by adding 200 engineers to its existing R&D team in Beijing in 2009. The new personnel will spearhead the Company's research, design, development and commercialization of 3G handsets, with a focus on TD-SCDMA and WCDMA products. more

Slower Replacement Cycle to Shrink Taiwan's Mobile Phone Market in 2009
Taiwan's mobile phone market is forecast to shrink by 9.3% to around 6.4 million units. The Taipei-based Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC) puts the shrinkage down to slower handset replacements due to the economic downturn. Some 80% of the Taiwanese market depends on replacement sales. more

Nokia Siemens and Ericsson May Win 20% of Chinese 3G Tender
China Mobile is expected to announce the winners of its US$4.4 billion 3G network tender, with Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) and Ericsson both expected to receive around 10% of the contract each. The contract is for the second phase of China Mobile's trial TD-SCDMA based service which aims to expand the network to a further 28 cities. more

Twenty-eight independent mobile operators and commercial mobile license owners in the USA have established a new company, NextGen Mobile, to help promote the existence of small and rural wireless companies throughout the country. China Mobile Records 490,000 Phone Calls During Olympic Ceremonies
A China Mobile spokesman has said that nearly half a million phone calls were made on its GSM network around the Olympic stadium during the opening and closing ceremonies. Almost 24,000 users made calls in and around the National Stadium, the Bird's Nest, during Sunday night's closing ceremony. The figure included about 20,000 international roaming service users. more
