Bharti Airtel Launches India's Latest 3G Network

­India's Bharti Airtel - now just plain Airtel - has launched its 3G network, with coverage initially in the southern Karnataka state, whose capital is the technology hub of Bangalore. The company expects to offer 3G services in 40 cities by March across all of its 13 licensed areas, and expand the services to 1,500 cities and towns within a year.  more

Ericsson, ZTE Disqualified from Thai 3G Contract Tender

­Ericsson and ZTE have complained about the tender process being carried out by Thailand's state-owned telco, TOT over its US$650 million 3G network contract. The TOT had issued a preliminary statement that ruled the two companies out of the bidding.  more

Ericsson Gets 7-Year IT Systems Upgrade Contract from 3 Italia

­Hutchison 3G Italy (3 Italia) has awarded a 7-year contract to Ericsson to modernize its IT infrastructure and systems including hardware and software, IP connectivity, operating systems and storage. The contract covers data center consolidation with hardware modernization, upgrade and consolidation of 3 Italia's software application domains, as well as transformation of operations and business support systems (OSS/BSS), for example systems for billing and customer relationship management.  more

Equipment vendors continuing to struggle with component shortages

The major western vendors in TBR's 2Q10 Network Business Quarterly (NBQ) Benchmark report found themselves limited by component shortages, most notably in the cases of Ericsson and Nokia Siemens. The good news for these vendors is that as this shortage gradually abates in 2H10, a backlog of deferred activity should result in improving revenue growth.  more

Vodafone Spurns Chinese Vendors for Indian 3G Rollout

Vodafone's Indian subsidiary is reported to be spurning China's Huawei and ZTE for its 3G network rollout. Citing unnamed sources, OneIndia News said the the contract for its 3G deployment could go to previous suppliers, Nokia Siemens Networks and Ericsson.  more

Ericsson Wins Chinese Contracts Worth $1.8 Billion

Ericsson has announced the signing of separate contracts with China Mobile and China Unicom which are collectively worth around US$1.8 billion. Under the agreement with China Mobile, Ericsson will provide a radio access network and mobile soft-switching technology. The framework contract is worth US$1 billion and will be implemented during 2010.  more

Ericsson and MTN Ghana Test First UMTS 900 MHz Roll-Out in Africa

Ericsson says that it has successfully trialed a 3G network at 900 MHz for the first time on the African continent with operator MTN Ghana. Under the terms of the agreement, Ericsson will be responsible for the access, transport and transmission of 3G UMTS 900 MHz, where roll-out will begin in Q2 2010. Additionally, Ericsson developed advanced special features and assisted with the spectrum optimisation of GSM to free up just 3.8MHz required for UMTS 900 MHz.  more

AT&T to Upgrade Network to LTE from 2011

AT&T has awarded contracts to Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson as equipment suppliers for its planned deployment an LTE upgrade to its network. The selection of the two suppliers paves the way for AT&T's planned field trials of LTE technology later this year, with commercial deployment scheduled to begin in 2011.  more
