Bharti Airtel in Talks with Rivals Over National 3G Network Sharing

India's Bharti Airtel is reported to be in talks with other Indian operators - including Vodafone Essar and Idea Cellular - to set up some form of alliance for the deployment of their 3G networks. The alliance is required to enable the operators to provide national coverage, as none of the operators have 3G licenses in all the licensed regions (circles).  more

India Running Out of 2G Radio Spectrum in Some Areas

India is running out of radio spectrum for its existing 2G network operators and has exhausted all the available spectrum in some of its license circles. According to an internal analysis by the department of telecom, seen by The Economic Times, 10 of the circles are now dependent on the military to vacate its radio spectrum if any additional capacity is to be made available.  more

Thailand's TOT Seeking Funds for 3G Rollout

Thailand mobile operator, TOT is preparing to raise funds for its 3G network from outside debt sources if the government refuses to act as a loan guarantor, said president Varut Suvakorn. India Expects to Raise $7.2 Billion from 3G License Auction

India's government has published its budget and is forecasting that the oft-delayed 3G license auction will raise at least Rs 35,000 crore (US$7.2 billion). The figure is significantly higher than the Rs 20,000-25,000 crore. that had been expected before the Finance Ministry started arguing over the license fees.  more

Turkcell Secures Export Financing for Ericsson 3G Kit Purchase

Turkish mobile network operator, Turkcell has announced the signing of a US$285 million loan agreement to buy 3G network infrastructure from Ericsson. The Board of Directors said that they have authorised up to US$750 million of export financing for network expenditure.  more

Thailand 3G License Sale Could be Delayed Until 2010

Thailand's on/off process to issue 3G licenses seems to have hit the off-switch again with reports that the tender could be delayed until next year, with network launches not now expected until late in 2010. The secretary-general of the Office of National Telecommunications Commission, Suranand Wongwittayakamjorn told the Bangkok Post that "the much-awaited trial auction for 3G licences will now be put back to January, with licences being awarded by the first quarter of next year"  more

Department of Telecom Updates on Indian 3G License Plans

India's Department of Telecom (DoT) has announced the availability of the radio spectrum that will be made available if and when the 3G licenses are finally auctioned. The document shows that the government could earn an additional Rs 21,480 crore if the frequencies are auctioned according to the finance ministry's formula.  more

Gemalto Supplying to All Three Mobile Operators in China

Smartcard vendor, Gemalto says that it has started supplying its UICC (Universal Identity Cryptographic Computer) and R-UIM (Removable User Identity Module) cards to all three mobile operators in China for their 3G networks. With deliveries made through its joint ventures in China, Gemalto says that it is the first provider to be fully qualified to support the different 3G wireless standards; CDMA EVDO, TD-SCDMA and WCDMA.  more
