Department of Telecom Updates on Indian 3G License Plans

India's Department of Telecom (DoT) has announced the availability of the radio spectrum that will be made available if and when the 3G licenses are finally auctioned. More Delays to India's 3G License Auction

There has been a further delay to India's already oft-delayed 3G license auction, after the Indian Cabinet decided to refer the issue to a Group of Ministers (GoM) to adjudicate on. The troubled auction of 3G licenses in India has had another set-back today after a terse note was posted on the Department of Telecommunications' website stating simply that the auction date has been postponed. No reason has been given, or any indication of when the matter will be resolved.  more

India Faces Further Delays to its 3G License Auction

India faces further delays to its 3G license auction after the Finance Ministry recommended a doubling of the reserve price for the licenses for each circle. Last week, the Department of Telecom (DoT) announced that the auctions, which were scheduled to start on Jan 16th, had been postponed to Jan 30th, as the government has not yet approved some key parameters.  more

Vodafone Seeks Delay in India's 3G License Auction

Even mighty Vodafone seems to be feeling the credit crunch, and has written to the Indian government seeking a delay to the 3G license auction - citing difficulties in raising the necessary funds. The auction is expected to be held before the end of this year, although recent reports have suggested the government may have to delay the auction due to radio spectrum issues.  more

India to Have 6.9 Million WiMAX Connections by the End of 2011

Gartner has published a report which says that India will have 6.9 million mobile and fixed WiMAX connections by the end of 2011. Gartner cautioned though that India will remain a niche market for this technology until 2009. Although the Indian government is strongly promoting WiMAX as a technology to connect the country with broadband services, the country-specific mobile broadband framework makes a nationwide rollout of WiMAX cost prohibitive.  more
