Zain Still Aiming for 3G Launch at End of February

Jordan Telecom Sues the Government over 3G License Exclusivity

­Jordan's government has rejected claims by Jordan Telecom (JTG) that it broke an exclusivity agreement for 3G services after the telecoms regulator was reported to have granted a license to rival, Zain. Jordan Telecom is seeking JD120 million in compensation for the "damage caused by granting the 3G licence to another operator".  more

Nextel Brazil Pays $714 Million for nationwide 3G License

­NII Holdings has announced that its subsidiary, Nextel Brazil was the winning bidder for 20 MHz licenses in the 1.9-2.1GHz frequency band (H band) auctioned by Brazil's telecoms regulator, Anatel. Nextel Brazil was the successful bidder for 11 of the 13 lots included in the H Band auction. The regional licenses won by Nextel Brazil cover approximately 182.4 million people in the country, or 97% of the Brazilian population, and 97% of the areas that generate the GDP in Brazil. These licenses cover all major metropolitan areas in Brazil including Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia.  more

Reliance Launches 3G Network in Four Indian Cities

­India's Reliance Communications (RCom) has announced the launch of its 3G services, starting with the Top 3 Metros of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, along with the city of Chandigarh, making it the country's first 3G operator to cover all the Top 3 Metros. The 3G network offers a theoretical peak download speed of up to 28Mbps.  more

Etisalat Nigeria Acquired 3G License

Etisalat Nigeria is reported to have acquired a 3G license through the purchase of another company that had been granted the license by the Nigerian Communications Commission. Etisalat Nigeria's CEO, Mr. Steven Evans, said that with the acquisition, the telecoms operator would now have access to a 3G licence like the other three GSM companies in the country.  more

Kenya Awards Third 3G License

The Communications Commission of Kenya has awarded a 3G license to France Telecom's local subsidiary, making it the third network in the country to hold a 3G license. The company paid US$10 million for the license.  more

Teletalk to Get Bangladesh's First 3G License

Bangladesh's state-owned mobile network, Teletalk is to get a headstart over the private networks with its 3G network and will launch its services before the other networks are granted a license. The regulator, the BTRC will issue licenses on demand, but Teletalk will get priority.  more

Tunisia Grants a 3G License

Tunisia's state-controlled mobile network operator, Tunisie Telecom has been awarded a 3G license, the Reuters news agency has reported, citing a statement from the Telecommunications Ministry. Tunisie Telecom is majority owned by the state while Dubai's TECOM Investments and Dubai Investment Group jointly hold 35 percent.  more

Idea Cellular May Face 3G Delays in Punjab

Indian mobile network operator, Idea Cellular may face a delay in launching its 3G network in Punjab as it waits for regulatory clearance over its purchase of Spice Telecom. While Idea won 3G licenses in Punjab during 3G license auction held earlier this year, the UAS license that permits telecoms operations covering Punjab is held by Spice Telecom.  more
