World Telecom Equipment Market an Expected $370 Billion in 2013

Following a productive year in 2008, the telecom equipment market posted a decline worse than anticipated shrinking by 3.6% in infrastructure and by 9.9% in mobile handsets during 2009. ­In 2010, the global telecom equipment market growth rate is expected to remain stable as operators will still be cautious and wait for a gradual expected return to growth, reports Idate Research.  more

Fitch: India's 3G Auction Adds to Telecom Sector Credit Woes

Fitch Ratings says that India's just concluded 3G licences and spectrum auction will have a negative impact on the credit metrics of most private telecom operators in the short to medium term. In a report to be published shortly, the agency estimates the high up-front licence and spectrum fees would significantly raise net debt levels for most of the telcos -- and financial leverage can accordingly be expected to deteriorate -- assuming Indian telcos fund their purchases at the auction through debt.  more

SFR and Orange Gain Additional French 3G Radio Spectrum

Cost of Indian National 3G License Passes $2.8 Billion

India's 3G auction reached its 25th day on Saturday with bids crossing the Rs 51,000-crore mark as the bid price for a national licence rose to Rs 12,851 crore (US$2.82 billion). The original estimates for the auction were that it might raise around Rs 35,000 crore, with a reserve price of Rs 3,500 crore for a national license.  more

Belgium to Offer Fourth 3G License

The Belgian government is planning to auction off its fourth remaining 3G license along with some additional radio spectrum in higher bands, reports De Standaard newspaper. The license was originally put up for sale in 2001 although only the incumbent operators picked up licenses at the time.  more

French Operators Agree to Share 3G Network Infrastructure

The French telecoms regulator, ARCEP has announced that the country's three incumbent network operators have signed an agreement for sharing their 3G network infrastructure. The declaration followed the relaxing of regulations last April.  more

Thai Operator Launches Limited 3G Network

Thailand's state-controlled mobile network, TOT has formally launched its 3G network, although local news media said that the event generated a lukewarm reaction from potential subscribers. The network is being offered in the capital city, Bangkok and the surrounding areas.  more

Thailand's TOT to Proceed with 3G Rollout Plans

Thai mobile network operator, TOT is to push ahead with its plans for a 3G network, despite recent reports that it would delay its plans pending the final 3G license tender. Thailand's Information and Communications Technology Minister, Ranongruk Suwanchawee said that his ministry had the final say over plans by the state-owned telecoms operator in this area.  more
