GSM Family Subscriptions Reach 3 Billion Worldwide

The trade body, 3G Americas has announced that the world now has 3 billion mobile phone users based on the GSM family (inc UMTS), based upon research and projections by Informa Telecoms and Media. Forecast: Half a Billion GSM/UMTS Subscriptions in the Americas by Year End

Trade group, 3G Americas says that by the end of 2008, there will be more than half a billion mobile wireless subscriptions to the GSM technology family including EDGE and UMTS/HSPA in the Americas, according to forecasts by Informa Telecoms & Media. Tremendous growth was posted in the year 2007, as the GSM family of technologies once again grew its market share as the number one mobile wireless technology in the Western Hemisphere, with a 64% regional share of market.  more

Cingular Wireless CTO Re-Elected as 3G Americas' Chairperson

Kristin Rinne, Chief Technology Officer for Cingular Wireless, is returning for a second term as 3G Americas' chairperson in 2006 after re-election by the organization's Board of Governors. Alan Pritchard, Nortel Vice President of GSM/UMTS Global Product Marketing, was elected treasurer for the new year. more

GSM tops Americas growth charts in 2003

GSM is the technology selected by 43% of all new digital wireless customers in the Americas, making it the number 1 choice of all mobile technologies -- after showing substantial growth for the second quarter of 2003. 3G Americas reports a year of solid growth for GSM in the Western Hemisphere, topping the charts with a 78% annual growth rate from June 2002 to June 2003, the highest annual growth of any mobile technology based on the statistical evidence of the EMC World Cellular Database. more

EDGE convention held in Brazil

Wireless operators and vendors dedicated to EDGE wireless technology shared the latest developments in service models and equipment with Latin American operators and regulators during a high-level EDGE Operators' Forum seminar held on Tuesday in conjunction with the 3GSM Americas conference. Over 60 guests attended the high-level meeting, representing leading GSM and TDMA operators from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and the USA. Forum members discussed the latest plans for deployment, strategy, and marketing of a cost efficient third generation wireless data service using EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution). Additionally, the first international call using EDGE handsets was demonstrated to press and analysts yesterday. more

GSM and TDMA take the majority of customers in America

3G Americas, the wireless trade organization focused on the wireless industry in the Americas, announced figures using data provided by the EMC World Cellular Database for the year end growth of GSM and TDMA in the Americas to more than 107 million subscribers, representing about 61% of all digital cellular subscribers. During the year ending December 31, 2001, GSM grew by 50.4% to nearly 17 million subscribers in North, Central, and South America. In that same period of time, TDMA added more subscribers than any other technology in the Americas with a year-end figure of over 90 million subscribers. The growth of GSM and TDMA combined represent 56% of the total digital cellular growth in the Americas during 2001. more

American continent gets wireless trade body

A new wireless trade organization focusing on the Americas has been set up. Bill Clift, Chief Technical Officer for Cingular Wireless, will serve as its first chairman. 3G Americas will represent the five principle wireless technologies of the Americas: GSM, TDMA, GPRS, EDGE, and UMTS. With some of the world's largest wireless operators and vendors as its members, the organization will work collaboratively on regulatory and technical issues for the benefit of customers throughout the Americas. more
