UK Regulator Issues Another Consultation on its 4G License Auction

UK Regulator Outlines Plans for 4G License Auction

­The UK's telecoms regulator, Ofcom has announced the proposed details for its upcoming radio spectrum auction which is expected to pave the way for 4G services in the country. The regulator says that the spectrum auction is the largest ever single auction of additional spectrum for mobile services in the UK, equivalent to three quarters of the mobile spectrum in use today and 80% more than the 3G auction which took place in 2000.  more

Ericsson Tops LTE Infrastructure Market; Samsung Tops WiMAX - Report

After plunging in the second half of 2010, the GSM RAN market bounced back (up 38% in 4Q10 over 3Q10), fueled by the start of major 2g capacity upgrades in China and India as well as modernization projects in Europe, according to a report by Infonetics Research. LTE network equipment, including E-UTRAN (eNodeB) macrocells and Evolved Packet Core (EPC) equipment, jumped 704% in 2010 over 2009.  more

LTE to Overcome WiMAX and Dominate 4G Shipments

­Driven by widespread mobile network operator adoption, LTE will have more than nine times as many subscribers as WiMAX by 2014, according to new IHS iSuppli research. Worldwide LTE subscribers will rise rapidly during the next two years, and in 2012 will surpass those of WiMAX, the current leading 4G air standard. In 2014, LTE subscribers will reach 303.1 million, compared to 33.4 million for WiMAX.  more

ADC In-Building Wireless Systems Drive WiMAX Deployments

ADC has announced that its InterReach Fusion distributed antenna system (DAS) has been deployed to extend WiMAX coverage and capacity inside a major airport and three hospitals. Deployed at the request of the largest WiMAX operator in the United States (obviously, Clearwire), the InterReach Fusion system has been installed in Washington Reagan National Airport, and in VA hospitals in Dallas, San Antonio, and Temple, Texas.  more

WiMAX Deployments Go Global with 519 in 146 Countries

In spite of the financial downturn which has impacted telecom investments, wireless broadband Internet deployments based upon WiMAX have reached 519 in 146 countries, including 95 WiMAX networks deployed by 2g mobile operators. Of the 519 WiMAX deployments, 112 were added in 2009. The WiMAX ecosystem advanced certification activity with 86 products receiving WiMAX Forum Certified status this year.  more
