South Africa's Telkom Applies for Mobile License
South Africa's dominant landline provider, Telkom is reported to have requested permission from the regulator to set up its own wholy owned mobile phone network. The company is currently a 50% shareholder in the country's largest mobile operator, Vodacom along with Vodafone - but is generally accepted to be looking at a sale of its holding. more

Brazil's Unicel wins license to operate in 900MHz band
The company paid 15mn reais (US$8.23mn) for two blocks of 2.5MHz spectrum. The license authorizes the operator to offer services to 63 municipalities in the city of Sao Paulo and adds to the company's existing 30MHz in the 1800mhz band. more
