O2, Vodafone Reported to be in Network Sharing Talks
UK operators, O2 and Vodafone are reported to be in advanced talks regarding sharing their network infrastructure. Citing people close to the talks, the Financial Times that a deal "could provide them with significant savings in capital and operating spending". Vodafone's CEO, Vittorio Collao is currently seeking annual cost savings of £1bn by 2010-11 to bring the UK divisions' operating margins up to the average compared to its other country networks. more

Brazil's Unicel wins license to operate in 900MHz band
The company paid 15mn reais (US$8.23mn) for two blocks of 2.5MHz spectrum. The license authorizes the operator to offer services to 63 municipalities in the city of Sao Paulo and adds to the company's existing 30MHz in the 1800mhz band. more

GSM Association Calls for More 3G in the GSM Spectrum Bands

Spectrum dispute resolved in Romania
The Romanian Ministry Of Communications and Information has confirmed the right of MobiFon, the local GSM900 network, to use 1800mhz spectrum. In an effort to resolve a longstanding dispute, the two existing GSM 900 operators in Romania - MobiFon and MobilRom, have agreed to voluntarily refrain from using the 1800mhz spectrum until January 1, 2003 while retaining exclusive use of their 900Mhz spectrum. Cosmorom, a subsidiary of Romtelecom, will have exclusive use of the 1800mhz spectrum until December 31, 2002 and will be allowed to use 900Mhz spectrum starting January 1, 2003." more
