Australian Government Funds CDMA 1X Rollout

Telstra Country Wide Area General Manager for Gippsland, Victoria, Mr Peter Ward has welcomed the Australian State Government's funding announcement of US$550,000 toward the implementation of a CDMA 1x network upgrade in the Gippsland region.

The funding was announced by the Hon John Brumby, Minister for State and Regional Development, and will go towards the delivery of a mobile technology service to the Gippsland region. As a result, customers and businesses can benefit from higher speed wireless technology using the CDMA 1x network.

Mr Ward said the funding announcement was wonderful news for the Gippsland area.

"We are thrilled Gippsland has been chosen to benefit from this new technology, and we can now start work on planning and implementing our upgrades to the CDMA network," he said.

The CDMA 1x mobile technology will cover the Shire of Wellington, South Gippsland, Latrobe and East Gippsland, Baw Baw, Bass Coast and Cardinia including the towns of Warragul, Traralgon, Moe, Morwell, Sale, Yarram, Bairnsdale, Leongatha, Foster, Cowes, Wonthaggi and Pakenham.

The project consortium involved Wellington Shire Council, as coordinator for the seven Shire Councils involved and Telstra Country Wide, as the carrier installing the CDMA 1x infrastructure and providing the services.

The funding has been made available through the Customer Access Network (CAN) Demonstrations Program in the Victorian Government's Regional Connections policy that promote communications investments across the State."
