Motorola has said that Omnitel, the largest wireless network operator in the Baltic States, is the first to commercially deploy it's new generation Horizon II Base Transceiver Station (BTS). Deployment of the new Horizon II base stations, one of the most powerful GSM/GPRS/EDGE base stations for its size on the market, is part of an expansion contract for hardware and services that the companies signed earlier this year to provide additional coverage on Omnitel's 900MHz and 1800 MHz networks.
The initial deployment of the Horizon II is on Omnitel's 1800 MHz network in the capital city of Vilnius, with 900 MHz network services to follow in Q4 2003. With this expansion, Omnitel will increase its network capacity and coverage to provide voice and data services to nearly one million subscribers.
Motorola has been supplying GSM communications infrastructure equipment to Omnitel since 1995. In 2002 Motorola provided Omnitel with software upgrades to the GPRS portions of their network that activated Coding Schemes 3 and 4 (CS-3 and CS- 4) functionality to enable enhanced data service delivery. Commercial deployment of this service began in early 2003.
"Omnitel continues to provide our customers with the latest available network equipment and technologies to offer exciting new services, improve their experience, and increase satisfaction with our network performance," said Antanas Zabulis, president and chief executive officer, Omnitel. "Using the Horizon II in our network expansion provides increased capacity and coverage while improving operability, and it's a sound long-term investment for us as we look to future network development."
