Nokia yesterday launched two new GSM handsets. The first, the Nokia 6600 is a tri-band (GSM 900/1800/1900) handset that uses the Series 60 software platform. The camera includes a VGA camera for video recording and still image capture with 2x digital zoom, as well as a large 65,536 colour display. The Nokia 6600 also makes it possible to capture, send and receive video clips with audio, as well as receive streaming video content in both RealVideo and 3GPP video streaming formats. The handset is also one of the first that supports a direct TCP/IP connection, allowing it to bypass the networks WAP Gateways and connect direct to web sites and mobile content download servers.
"In an increasingly fast-paced business environment, where access to a wide range of information is a necessity, individuals must find ways to strike a balance between work and family," says Juha Putkiranta, Senior Vice President of Nokia's Imaging Business Unit. "The Nokia 6600 offers the best of both worlds - advanced business features to keep on top of everything at the office, together with the latest functionality to capture precious family moments."
Users can shape their mobile environment by adding applications compatible with either the Symbian 7.0s operating system or applications based on the latest Java technology, MIDP 2.0. Applications can be stored either in the phone's 6MB internal memory or on the 32MB MMC card included in the sales package. The Nokia 6600 is expected to be commercially available during the fourth quarter of 2003 in Europe, Africa, and Asia-Pacific markets.
Nokia also launched a tri-band handset aimed at the consumer market. The Nokia 3100 is a Series 40 handset supporting MMS, colour screen and is planned to start shipping during the third quarter 2003, in Europe, Africa and Asia Pacific. Nokia also introduced a number of complementary lifestyle enhancements to accompany the Nokia 3100, including the Nokia Fun Camera, a stand-alone VGA camera with its own viewfinder, flash and power supply. With 8 MB of memory, the Nokia Fun Camera can store up to 50 images, and can be attached to compatible Nokia phones with a Pop-Port(TM) connector. The Pop-Port connectivity of the Nokia 3100 enables users to add an exciting array of enhancements, including the Nokia Radio Headset, also announced today. This combination stereo FM radio with display and headset simply clips onto a lapel or slips into a shirt pocket.
The Nokia 3100 is the first Nokia phone to offer a new generation of Xpress-on gaming cover enhancements. Sold separately, the Xpress-on gaming cover features "electroluminescence" - special light effects that sparkle through translucent faceplates in rhythm with ringing tones, games, alarm and other phone functions. Featuring an 8-way rocker, the Xpress-on gaming cover offers an advanced gameplay experience and incorporates electroluminescent light effects in sync with specific games."
