Second Network Launches Video MMS in Singapore

SingTel's mobile customers will be able to send and receive Video Multimedia Messages (MMS) free-of-charge from 2 April 2003 to 31 May 2003. Video MMS enables customers to add short video clips to text and send them to an email address or another user with a Video MMS-enabled phone. Customers can also record short clips on mobile handsets such as the newly launched Nokia 3650 or Sony Ericsson P800 and send it to their friends via MMS.

Users can send and receive video clips which are less than 100 kilobytes in size. This works out to about five to 15 seconds of video images.

Said Mr Andrew Buay, SingTel's Vice-President (Consumer Marketing): "We have seen an accelerated pick-up in MMS usage as consumers become more attracted to the idea of being able to send pictures with text. With short video clips, they will be able to express themselves even more than what still pictures can offer.

"With Video MMS, customers will be able to download video clips, such as movie trailers, attach a quick message and send these off to their friends. They can even record a quick personal video."

SingTel currently has more than 40,000 MMS subscribers.

Video MMS is part of SingTel's extensive suite of mobile data services and is expected to pave the way for the introduction of 3G in Singapore. Video services will be an essential part of the 3G services that SingTel will roll out.

In conjunction with the launch of the service, SingTel is offering its customers free video content for download via WAP. Customers can download movie trailers (for The Recruit as an example), as well as sports, action and vacation clips. Customers without Video MMS phones will still be able to receive Video MMS via e-mail. SingTel is also offering more than 100 free MMS picture downloads from its website"
