Singapore's M1 has just added another "media" to multimedia messaging (MMS), by being the first to offer video clips on mobile phones. M1 was also the first to launch MMS in Singapore last year. The new service called Video Downloads enables M1 customers to download and enjoy video clips on their phones. More than 20 video clips each running between 10 and 15 seconds are available initially, featuring sports, fashion, lifestyles and trailers from "Oliver!" the musical. The number and variety of video clips will increase over time.
Only Sony Ericsson P800 phones can access the service at launch. Downloaded clips can also be forwarded, but only to other P800 phones. More MMS phones from other manufacturers will be able to support this service eventually.
Clips from Video Downloads are offered free currently. Users only need to pay the normal GPRS charges for transmission at 1.04 cents/KB. M1 customers who subscribe to GPRS plans will be able to enjoy Video Downloads under these plans.
M1's Chief Executive Officer, Neil Montefiore, said: "M1 customers have embraced the new Multimedia Messaging Service with enthusiasm and usage has shown exciting growth over the past few months. The opportunity to send friends and relatives fun and exciting video clips that can convey strong personal emotions such as love or apology can be very compelling, or the video clips could be pure entertainment or humour."
