MTN's Uganda GSM operation has extended its network coverage to all 38 district capitals as stipulated in their license. The last four districts - Bundibugyo, Kitgum, Kotido and Moroto - were connected to the MTN network mid December. MTN has not limited its network expansion to the district capitals as stipulated in its license only but also extended to hundreds of other towns and villages. The 38 districts are part of more than 100 other towns connected to the MTN network, making it the biggest network in Uganda.
MTN has invested more than US$175 million in its network since commencement of operations in Uganda. This figure represents more than double the initial figure.
According to Thomas Bragaw, CEO, "Reaching all 38 districts capitals is a huge milestone for MTN. MTN has not only covered the 38 but gone ahead to extend its services to numerous other places. As a result, millions of Ugandans have access to quality telecommunications through our mobile, fixed line or payphone services. In most cases, these places had no means of telecommunications at all prior to MTN's commencement there."
As in all other places MTN has extended its coverage to, MTN has also made acquisition of its products convenient for customers. To this end, MTN has more than 600 outlets from which customers can purchase airtime or service fee cards, sim packs and new handsets. MTN says that it will continue to invest in its network coverage this year by increasing capacity in many areas already covered and extending to completely new areas."
