Nigeria Bans Promotions Following Network Congestion Complaints

Increased congestion on the network was put down to "incessant promos and lotteries." by the NCC's director of public affairs, Mr. Tony Ojobo.

"This ban is with immediate effect and shall continue to remain in force until such a time as may be determined by the Commission," Ojobo said.

The ban was imposed after it was claimed that the promotions offering extra voice calls when used within a set period were causing traffic spikes on the network close to the expiry time, and hence a rise in network congestion.

The congestion was reportedly badly affecting network interconnections when customers called a person on another mobile network.
