Former Telecom Italia CEO Facing Prosecution for SIM-Card Fraud

It had been alleged that the company inflated its subscriber base by falsely registering SIM card sales in order to boost its apparent market share as reported to the stock market.

The prosecutor is seeking to indict the former CEO, Riccardo Ruggiero and ex-managers Luca Luciani and Massimo Castelli on charges of interfering with the regulatory process.

The fraud is alleged to have involved the company renewing over 5 million prepay SIM cards close to their expiry date for being classed as inactive by charging a single Euro-cent to each card, thus keeping it active for a further 90 days.

The artificially inflated subscriber numbers were then reported to the regulator.

The charges carry a potential maximum sentence of eight years if convicted.
