Ericsson Warns Against Over-Hyping LTE Download Speeds

Ericsson has warned that expectations of mobile download speeds are being over hyped as networks prepare to roll out LTE based networks. The issue has cropped up before. When Australia's Telstra launched its 21Mbps HSPA+ upgrade, it also advised customers that typical download speeds would average 8Mbps.

"The technical guys know that advertising those big speeds is damaging, but they're the numbers the marketing guys want to push," John Cunliffe, Ericsson's chief technology officer told the PC Pro magazine. "It's difficult, if one company is advertising the maximum speed, for another to then turn around and advertise the likely speed. It's going to need everybody to be honest."

He also warned that the UK operators might not deploy LTE upgrades until 2012 due to radio spectrum concerns.
