Optimus Primes its Mobile Broadband Speed to Support 21.6 Mbps

Portuguese mobile network operator, Optimus has joined the small, but growing list of networks to have upgraded their mobile download speeds to a peak rate of 21.6 Mbps. The upgrade to HSPA+ also included an improvement to the upload channel to support peak rates of 5.76 Mbps.

The announcement comes just a few days after Vodafone Portugal also announced an identical upgrade to its network.

The upgrade currently covers Lisbon and Porto and will be progressively expanded to other areas and cities. Along with the mobile data speed upgrade, the network operator is also increasing the capacity of its base stations and improving their backhaul with fiber optic connections.

According to figures from the Mobile World analysts, Optimus is the smallest network operator in Portugal, having ended Q1 '09 with just over 3.2 million customers, and a market share of 20.4%.
