
Ireland based landline operator, eircom has launched a mobile broadband service via its mobile subsidiary, Meteor. With the new offer customers will have free access to eircom's Wi-Fi network, in over 1,000 locations across the country as well as a 10GB mobile download allowance.
The HSPA network offers peak download speeds of up to 7.2Mb.
Commenting at the launch, Gerry Culligan, Director of Consumer Market, eircom said "This is a very exciting move for eircom and we are delighted to be back in mobile. As Ireland's leading provider of broadband services, today's move puts us in a very strong position. We already provide our DSL customers with fast reliable broadband at home and now with eircom mobile broadband we offer customers increased freedom and flexibility to use broadband when and where they like outside the home in coverage areas. We now can truly meet customer's individual broadband needs".
Currently eircom customers living in Dublin, Cork city, Dundalk, Drogheda, Bray, Naas and Newbridge can purchase the mobile broadband service. Coverage will be expanded to well over half the population by the end of the year.
Meteor is the 3rd ranked, out of four, networks in Ireland. Figures from the Mobile World analysts shows that the operator ended Q1 '09 with a shade over 1 million customers, representing a market share of around 19.8%.
