Malawi Awards Third Mobile Firm Licence for Operations

APA-Lilongwe (Malawi) Malawi's third cellular phone network company, G-Mobile, has been awarded a licence by the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra), a body which regulates the communication sector, to start its operations in the country.

G-Mobile vice-chairperson Limbani Kalilani on Thursday promised the nation first class telecommunication services, saying his company, which is expected to invest US$40 million in the venture within the first five years of operations, will bring more advanced technology to the mobile phone market.

"We will be introducing the first ever hybrid network in Malawi. We want [mobile] services in the country to match the best in Africa," he said.

He said the company is expected to employ 900 Malawians.

The network will, in addition, reach the rural masses by providing facilities which will "facilitate easy access to telecommunications services."

MACRA chair Thengo Maloya said Malawians have high expectations from the new company on the quality of service to be offered to them.

He therefore gave the company ten days to roll out its services, failing which his body shall revoke the licence.
