Malawi Introduces New Digit Numbering System for Phone Operators

APA-Lilongwe (Malawi) MalawiĆ's Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) on Friday announced a new nine digit numbering plan (NP) to be implemented by telephone operators starting in 2009, APA has learnt here.

MACRA said the new nine digit numbering plan was one way of the organisations preparation to the telecommunications market for new entrants.

"The inefficient use of the numbering resources by the operators has resulted in the numbers within the access code to be exhausted much faster and making the NP unable to accommodate more service providers," he added.

He further said the new NP is considered as a tool to support competition from telecommunication operators and cope up with modern technological developments.

Licenced operators will be expected to implement the new numbering plan, he said.

Currently, the operators to implement the new system are the Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL), Zain Malawi, Telekom Networks (TNM), Global Access Intergrated Networks Limited (GAIN) and Access Communications Limited (ACL) who are currently using a seven digit numbering system.
