France Telecom has announced that it signed a memorandum of understanding with the Togolese government, which opens up the way for exclusive negotiations with regards to the attribution of a new global operator license in Togo under the Orange brand.
The country currently has two mobile operators, Moov (owned by Atlantic Telecom Group) and the state owned Togo Cellulaire.
According to figures from the Mobile World analysts, the country ended the first half of this year with an estimated 1.67 million mobile phone users - representing a population penetration level of 28.5%.
The current President of the country, Faure Gnassingb� if the former communications minister and son of the former dictator President. He took over the post following an abortive military coup and subsequent election which was widely reported to have been fraudulent. The European Union has suspended aid in support of the opposition claims, while the African Union and the United States have declared the vote "reasonably fair" and accepted the outcome.
