Romanian Telecoms Regulator Disbanded

The Romanian Government has shut-down the national telecoms regulator, Anrcti and created a new body to oversee telecoms regulations as a legal dispute between the former head of the regulator and the Prime Minister became more acrimonious.

The emergency declaration dissolving the former regulator now seems to make it impossible for the former regulator's director, Dan Georgescu to rejoin the regulator as a court ruled he should last week. He won the court case seeking his job back after he was sacked in August - and a second court ruling that his replacement, Liviu Nistoran could not take the role as the head of Anrcti.

Following the shut-down of the former regulator, Liviu Nistoran was later re-confirmed to head the new body, ANC by the Prime Minister, Mr. Calin Popescu-Tariceanu.

EU telecoms Commissioner, Viviane Reding has written to the Romanian Minister of Communications, Karoly Borbely expressing concerns about the restructuring of the regulator and seeking an explanation for the reasons behind the discharging of Mr Georgescu. The Minister has until the end of this week to reply.
