Anti-Israeli Messages Broadcast to Lebanese Phones

It has been claimed that Israel is sending pre-recorded messages to mobile phone owners in Lebanon as part of an ongoing psychological war. The Lebanese Al-Manar TV broadcaster, citing the fairly respected Voice of Lebanon Radio as it source said that there are increasing complaints about the recorded messages being sent to mobile phones.

It is not clear who is sending the messages - either an Israeli agency or a Lebanese organisation seeking to fuel antagonism towards Israel.

During the 2006 war, "Israel used a variety of technological weapons to wage a psychological war on Lebanon, including hacking into Hezbollah's Al-Manar television station and sending text messages and voice messages to mobile phones", the Al-Manar website report noted. During the war though, the Israeli military targeted the mobile phone networks, disabling them in the conflict area.

The Lebanese Minister of Telecommunications, Jibran Bassil is also investigating reports that Israel is hacking the land line networks as part of its spying operations.
