Turning Old Japanese Phones into Trees

Japan's DoCoMo has announced that it is to partner with affiliate, Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) and its mobile subsidiary SMART Communications to support reforestation in the Philippines for the next three years.

DoCoMo will provide funding to the PLDT-SMART Foundation, a philanthropic organization, which will organize reforestation in to-be-decided strategic locations, such as Angat Dam, one of the nation's largest dams and the major source of drinking water for Metro Manila.

DoCoMo will help fund the project by donating part of its revenue from the sale of recyclable materials recovered from used mobile phones. The phones are collected from DoCoMo customers, making them indirect contributors to the reforestation project.

The project is one of DoCoMo's many collaborations with the PLDT Group. DoCoMo has a stake of about 14% in PLDT, and the two companies carry out joint business.
