York Railway Stations Gets Free Wi-Fi Service

The major mainline rail station at York, UK has been blanketed with a free Wi-Fi service from the local rail operator. Train operator and station manager National Express East Coast has introduced free wireless internet across most of the station, which is used by more than 10 million rail passengers a year.

Steve Soards, station manager for National Express East Coast at York, said that the free Wi-Fi zone within York station covers the main concourse, including the waiting rooms and cafes, and platforms 1 to 5.

National Express East Coast introduced free Wi-Fi for all passengers throughout Standard as well as First Class on its trains last December, and the company says that usage increased four-fold in the first month alone.

The wireless network covering much of York station has been provided by Cityspace on behalf of National Express East Coast, which manages the station. As with the Wi-Fi service on National Express East Coast trains, the wireless internet connection is provided by Icomera.

Passengers can access the service by logging on to the network "nxecwifi_YORK" - which raises the question as to why, in general, public Wi-Fi SSID identifiers are not made more obvious, such as "free_wifi_service"?
