SIM-Free mobile phones overtook the Pre-Paid market in 2007 in Austria reports market researchers, GfK. The research firm said that consumers with a low affinity to mobile phones, looking for a low-end entry model - which dominates this segment - tend to go for this option.
Very interesting in the SIM-Free mobile phone market is the fact that the sales channel share is very different to the other areas. The dominating channel is "Technical Superstores", where the customer has a wide selection of different models including some very low-priced discount offers.
In 2008, the Austrian SIM-Free phone market now also boasts a wide variety of different models. Currently consumers can choose between 236 different SIM-Free models, which even outnumbers the range of contract models (209) offered by Austrian net operators.
