Bolivian Network Enables Electronic Top-Ups in Retail Stores

Bolivian operator, Viva has launched electronic top-ups for its PrePay customers throughout the country - in cooperation with mobile payments provider, MoreMagic Solutions. The MoreMagic MTopUp solution enables Viva users to prepay for airtime and services in small or large increments, at VIVA stores, dealers or independent agents. Using a mobile handset, POS device, or web interface, the VIVA agent enters the customer's number, a pin code and the credit amount, and the mobile customer is immediately credited.

"Mobile phone penetration in Bolivia has grown tremendously, from 6% in 2000, to more than 35% today, yet an important untapped market still exists," said Freddy Maldonado, CEO of Nuevatel. "With the convenience of the MoreMagic MTopUp solution, more customers will use VIVA service, because of its flexibility to recharge in small or large amounts, and its availability throughout the country."

"Throughout Bolivia, VIVA customers are enjoying the ability to recharge their mobile phones electronically, without having to look for a new dealer," said Pankaj Gulati, chairman and CEO, MoreMagic Solutions. "Nuevatel is again demonstrating its technological leadership by improving mobile services in Bolivia, and MoreMagic looks forward to working with Nuevatel as we roll out an expanding array of new services."

Figures from the Mobile World service report that Viva ended last year with an estimated 880,000 GSM subscribers - representing a market share of 45%. Bolivia has a population penetration level of around 40%.

Nuevatel - which operates the Viva network is a subsidiary of USA based Trilogy International Partners, which operates wireless communications companies in Bolivia, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
