China's handset production in China continues to rise, but at a slower rate according to figures from the Ministry of Industry and Information. The government department reported that in the first quarter of the year, handset production reached 141.29 million units. While this was a rise of 6.7% over the same period a year earlier, it is lower than the 27.8% rise in production compared to the first quarter of 2006.
The official Xinhua news agency reported that Motorola, a major producer which has operations in northern and eastern China, was said to be largely behind to the production decline in Tianjin, a municipality in north China, and in Zhejiang, an eastern province.
Tianjin recorded US$2.8 billion in revenues on mobile phone production in the first three months, down 20.8 percent. Zhejiang's revenue on mobile phone manufacturing was US$1.1 billion down 46.2 percent.
In 2007, China produced 548 million mobile phones.
