
The state owned Libya Telecom & Technology (LTT) has announced the award of a US$56 million contract to Alcatel-Lucent for a WiMAX network. LTT said that the "Libya WiMAX Mobile" project is expected to initially cover the cities of Tripoli, Benghazi, Sebha, Syrte, M useratha, Khoms, Jdabia, Beidha, Garyane, Beni Welid, Zouara, Tarhouna, Briga, Ho un, Zlitin, Zaouia, Gadhames and Ras Lanouf. Capacity should reach 300,000 customers
The signing of the contract was attended by the French Ambassador and Mohammed Muammar Gaddafi, as well as the secretary of the general people's committee of the Libyan general corporation of Posts and Telecommunication, Dr Mohamed Mouammar Qaddafi.
Speaking at the signing, Qaddafi also noted that "although the 9,000 km fiber-optic cable basic infrastructure project is currently being implemented in Libya, it will be operational early in 2009."
Libya Telecom & Technology was established in 1997 as a Private Libyan Company. LTT is Libya's main and biggest Internet service provider (ISP) offering both dial-up and broadband Internet to customers Libya wide. LTT was bought over by the General Post and Telecommunication Company (GPTC) in 2004.Muhammad Qaddafi, the eldest son of Libyan president Muammar al-Gaddafi is the Chairman.
