IT and telecoms has been ranked fifth out of eleven in a league table of the best jobs for British mums returning to work, according to a survey by the UK's Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA). Teaching topped the poll, closely followed by the catering, retail and leisure industries, with the legal profession coming in last.
Researchers asked 2000 mums across the UK which kind of jobs they felt were most suitable for women returning to work after a career break and asked how they felt they were treated upon their return to work. The survey found that:
The survey also showed that a 'passion for the job' plays a big part in making roles appealing to returning mums: 48% of teachers will return purely for the love of the job, compared to only 35% of IT workers.
Graham Holley, chief executive, of the TDA said: "Teaching is leading the way in offering a much more flexible way of working for mums returning to the workplace. Those returning to teaching are discovering that today's profession offers greater flexibility, better pay, and much more structured career development than even a few years ago. When combined with the second-to-none job satisfaction that comes from working with young people, it is not hard to see why teaching is a uniquely compelling profession to which people are magnetically drawn back."
