Vodafone May Have Secured the iPhone for India and Australia

Vodafone's Indian subsidiary is reported to have secured the rights to Apple's iPhone in the country. A report by the Business Standard suggests that the 8GB handset will be launched on the Vodafone Essar network in September with a price range of around Rs 27,200 and Rs 28,000 (around US$680). The 16GB model might be launched next year, depending on demand.

Apple sources in Singapore, when contacted last month, told the newspaper that the India launch would happen in 2008, but were tight-lipped on the exact date.

"The carrier deal for India is being worked out with Vodafone," said an Apple source, adding: "Vodafone could also become the carrier for the Australian market once iPhone is launched there, though more than one carrier is likely for Australia."

Vodafone denied the report.

The move to launch the 2G version of the handset in India could soak up any left-over supplies in other markets if or when a 3G model is launched.
